Biography

17-year-old violinist Mariam Abouzahra, born in Germany to Hungarian and Egyptian parents, gave her orchestral debut at the age of six with Charles de Bériot’s Violin Concerto in G major. Since then, she has appeared on major stages across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States.

She has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, ORF Radio-Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Concerto Budapest, Hungarian National Philharmonic, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonie Baden-Baden and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with artists including Plácido Domingo, Jakub Hrůša, András Keller, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Kristjan Järvi, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Marc Bouchkov and Maxim Rysanov.

Her performances have taken her to renowned venues including the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall in New York, Covent Garden in London, the Royal Opera Muscat, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, the Opera Houses of Cairo and Alexandria, Müpa Budapest, Opéra Grand Avignon, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and the European Palace in Strasbourg.

In 2024, Mariam won First Prize and the Soroptimist Prize at the International Viotti Competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition’s history. She is the recipient of the ICMA Discovery Award 2026, an award presented by the International Classical Music Awards to outstanding young artists, selected by an international jury of music critics and journalists.

Further major prize achievements include distinctions at the Austrian Television ORF "Goldene Note", The Nutcracker competition in Moscow, the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition, Virtuosos Talent Show and the A. Grumiaux International Competition.

Together with her sister, violinist Amira Abouzahra, she was awarded the Career Grant of the Charlotte White Foundation in New York. In November 2025, the sisters performed as the only instrumental soloists at the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, presenting a newly commissioned work with an international orchestra before more than 40 presidents, kings and high-ranking international leaders.

Mariam has been featured in a dedicated documentary by Austrian national television ORF as part of the series Stars and Talents. Since the age of ten, she has been studying with Prof. Dora Schwarzberg at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. She has also received important artistic impulses through work with musicians such as Gerhard Schulz, Donald Weilerstein, Augustin Hadelich, György Pauk, Christian Tetzlaff and Kristóf Baráti at festivals such as the Verbier Festival, IMS Prussia Cove and the Kronberg Festival. Mariam plays a Tononi violin and is generously supported with strings by Thomastik-Infeld Vienna.
